Q. In India one type of Stevia exists but you have written in articles that Stevia varieties are there?


Yes it is true that in India only one type of Stevia is available for farming and the growers are not aware of its origin. It is also true that Stevia varieties are available. From year 1979 to 1996 many varieties have been released from different countries. These varieties not only give higher yields but also rich in Steviosides. There is need to test these varieties in Indian conditions and also to develop Indian varieties for different agro climatic conditions. I am not in favor of using same type of Stevia for commercial cultivation throughout country. Same type shows different performance in different locations and farmers face many problems.
